Vaccinations are a touchy topic, especially these days. I question the quality of today’s vaccines. I question just about everything these days. Vaccinations can certainly be life-saving when needed, but I am adamantly opposed to mandating vaccines.
Inoculations are a very up-close-and-personal-thing. I believe that your body is your temple. What you do, personally, is a spiritual/religious connection that only you share based on personal faith.
Life and death are the core to everyone’s journey, and the decisions you make for your health cannot be mandated by another person; needless to say, by any government.
My grandparents were born in the late 1800s, and they weren’t vaccinated. They both lived to be a very healthy 101 and 102 years old. My parents had the polio vaccine later in life, and daddy had the WWII vacs, and they didn’t have any “diseases.”
I was a 1950s kid, and I didn’t have any inoculations as a baby, and I’m as healthy as a horse. I did have the red measles when I was 4 years old, and was sick as a dog. But darn, if that didn’t result in producing a rock-solid immune system on my behalf.
My sons were 1980s babies, and they merely had a handful of inoculations, and NOT as babies. They never caught a cold or even had the flu as kids. They did have the chicken pox. Big deal.
So, what’s up with this push for a growing number of vaccines today? And mandated by law in some states, no less.
Today, it’s a hard decision for parents pressured into making vaccination decisions for their children; for secondary school and university students, and for those among the general public who want to avoid getting sick at any cost.
When you study the history of vaccines, you can respect their evolution. You can also see how their benefits are an amazing tool. That said, as an environmental toxicologist and holistic nutritionist, I believe that Western societies have taken vaccinations too far.
We now ignore the causes of disease as first-responder solutions to epidemics, and our government has opted to manipulate the masses on the behalf of corporations that net massive profits through mandating an endless list of vaccinations.
What’s worse is fear is being used as a marketing tool.
Let’s Start at the Beginning
The story of vaccines does not begin with the first “vaccine” – it actually begins with smallpox and the “early” spread of infectious diseases in humans in urbanized areas.
History shows that the Chinese had discovered a variation of a smallpox prevention as early as 1000 CE. Africa and Turkey also used natural prevention before smallpox spread to Europe and the Americas.
We must remember two very important points about infectious diseases: 1) people have successfully treated diseases using natural methods throughout history, and 2) diseases became infectious once humans started to stagnate and populate within small living environments.
In other words, when humans started living closely together, crowded in villages and urban areas, exposure increased and diseases spread more rapidly.
Many diseases today are a product of “messing in our nests.”
The History of Vaccinations
The middle of the 20th century was an active time for vaccine research and development. Methods for growing viruses in the laboratory led to rapid discoveries and innovations, including the creation of vaccines for polio. Researchers targeted other common childhood diseases such as measles, mumps, and rubella, and vaccines for these diseases reduced the disease burden greatly.
Today, innovative techniques now drive vaccine research, with recombinant DNA technology and new delivery techniques leading scientists in new directions. Disease targets have expanded, and some vaccine research is beginning to focus on non-infectious conditions such as addiction and allergies.
Are we taking this too far?
The Human Immune System
As technology takes us farther down the road of wiping out anything and everything we see as a “threat”, we forget that supporting our natural immune system is a more critical priority. All animals have innate immune defenses against common pathogens. Good quality food, air, soil and water are primary ways to insure health and wellness.
We forget that pollution and waste, chemical foods (GMOs and artificial sweeteners), war chemicals, fracking and geo-engineering are polluting our environments beyond a healthy balance. Let’s focus on eliminating these toxins, and maybe new “modern” diseases won’t arise.
We pack our populations into congested cities, concrete over our growing fields with dirty super-highways and landfills, and we abuse medications, such as antibiotics, to the point of sterilizing our natural immune systems.
Today, we pump a newborn’s immune system with countless vaccines and questionable inoculations; leaving their natural immunity impotent and obsolete with each and every shot they get. And, the number of vaccines required for children increases every year.
No wonder diseases are spreading.
There is no doubt that Louis Pasteur’s 1885 rabies vaccine made a historic impact on human disease. And in the 1930s, at the dawn of bacteriology, antitoxins and vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, anthrax, cholera, plague, typhoid, and tuberculosis were miracle cures.
What’s different today?
Today as life becomes more complex, over-populated, more urbanized, and polluted, we no longer support our body’s natural immunity. And what’s the scariest part of modern disease? We no longer take the time to find better ways to prevent disease-environments.
What are we afraid of?
The human immune system is essential for our survival in a world full of potentially dangerous microbes and infecting agents. Instead of getting vaccinated for what might happen, or blaming those not vaccinated for making those who are vaccinated sick, let’s focus on the root of the problem first.
Instead of creating more fear of disease, let’s start teaching prevention, marketing more natural cures, and support cleaner environments. Once you let the fear of disease rule your life, you’ll be running from it for the rest of your life.
Vaccines are a wonderful thing when they are not abused. Use them when needed. Stop living in fear of the things that may never happen.
