Most of you know that I live on a wildlife preserve. This is an amazingly peaceful and beautiful place, but it comes with lots of creepy-crawlies and poisonous plants.
We constantly clear the property of the toxic plants, but wild birds, and we have plenty of those, spread the seeds of various plants and herbs typically from Central and South America and Mexico.
It appears that I was exposed to one of those toxic plants when I tried to pull it out of a flower pot.
Boy, did I have an allergic reaction.
Mexican Herbs
My ranch is located merely 5 miles north of Mexico, so many seeds propagated by native birds come from Mexico. Since we relocated here, I have taught myself a lot about Mexican medicinal herbs.
Two things that I can share are:
- they are powerful
- they work
Herbal medicine is a very specialized field for many reasons. Most herbal plants are used for specific health ailments, and importantly, herbs are VERY potent and effective so they need to be consumed in limited time intervals and in small doses.
Obviously, I exposed my skin to a very concentrated dose of what I suspect is a plant used in cancer cures in Mexico.
I feel like I just went through a week of chemo.
What Happened
My bad for not wearing garden gloves when I reached into a flower pot to remove what I thought was a weed. It had rooted to the bottom of the pot, so I couldn’t pull it out no matter how hard I tried.
Shortly after giving up, I noticed an itch on my arms, but I simply thought that it was one of those nasty, prickly weeds.
And then the reactions started.
As the day went on, my arms and hands began to itch big time. It was really itchy between my fingers, too, and THAT was miserable.
It had been very hot outside, so I was sweating a lot. I rubbed my neck, my face, and kept adjusting my hair clip.
By night fall, my entire body was red and itching like a mother. I took a warm bath in epsom salts, and began my detox program, downing a glass of French Green Clay.
And then it began ….
I started to swell.
Next, I broke out in red splotches and looked like I had a severe case of the Red Measles.
Swelling
The itching was driving me crazy, but the swelling had me concerned. I had no pain, and that’s typically a sign that you need to seek medical assistance.
So, I simply rested, swelled more, and itched.
Typically when I don’t feel well, I let whatever it is run its course. I was attempting to follow this protocol, but the swelling had me concerned.
It was moving around my body.
At first, my left hand swelled. After that swelling decreased, my right hand swelled. When that went back down, my bottom lip swelled, and I looked like I had an overdose of botox injections.
After my bottom lip went back to normal, my right ear swelled, then the left ear, and then my chin swelled.
After my chin stopped swelling, my upper lip blew up like a prize-fighter, followed by my right cheek.
I was really worried about my eyes swelling shut, but they were never affected. My eyebrows swelled, though.
Long story short, the swelling was traveling around my body, and I was very puzzled.
Still no pain.
OTC Antihistamines
I never take medicine, not even an aspirin. I am lucky to NEVER get a headache.
I did succumb to going to the store for an OTC antihistamine, some Calamine lotion, and an anti-itch cream.
The antihistamine stopped the itch, which was a good thing because I was spreading it everywhere – I couldn’t stop scratching.
Once the itching stopped, I rested for a couple of days and noted how the swelling moved around my body in waves. Once the swelling stopped spreading, I felt that I was on the mend.
Two Critical Supplements
The two detox supplements that helped me the most were the French Green Clay and the B3 niacin.
The clay flushed whatever this was out of my system, and the niacin cleansed my capillaries, also pushing the poison out through my skin.
After 2 1/2 days of some very creepy swelling, whatever I was exposed to was gone.
I feel that I allowed my immune system to strengthen on its own as it battled this toxin. If I had gotten a steroid shot, I believe that I would have suppressed the allergen, and pushed it into my body as opposed to expelling it through my skin. Because I was swelling so much, a shot might have caused longterm damage to my myelin sheath.
I do not recommend that everyone ride out an allergic reaction like this, but sometimes if you allow your body to kick its immune system into gear, you can overcome what appears to be a scary allergic reaction.
Reading this makes me itchy ….
