“If depression is creeping up and must be faced, learn something about the nature of the beast: You may escape without a mauling.”
– Dr. R. W. Shepherd
Everyone gets the blues every now and then, but today I think most of us are being pushed to our limits.
Most adults can handle stressful situations, especially when they are short-lived, but one thing to consider are the children.
Typically, children are unaware of adult tensions, and they go about their daily lives playing as normal.
However, they are observing what YOU may be experiencing as everyone is stuck inside together right now.
#1: Protect them from as much drama as possible;
#2: Keep them away from unhealthy foods and the diet chemicals; especially in gum and in sodas.
We all tend to snack and overeat when our daily routine is disturbed. It’s important to keep exercising, get outside in the fresh air, and resist eating unhealthy foods out of boredom.
Children who drink diet colas and eat food colorings and artificial sweeteners may be reacting to the chemicals in their foods. Being stuck indoors is unhealthy for any child, and they may start expressing a looming depression that sticks around.
Being “down in the dumps” over a long period of time is not a normal part of growing up. Try your best to stay positive as an example for those around you, and take away all diet foods and drinks sweetened with artificial sugars.
For YOU and for THEM.
If you eliminate processed foods with preservatives, food colorings and artificial chemicals, notice if the mood around the house improves.
This is the first place to start for adults and children.
Signs Of Depression
Here is a list of the most common signs of depression caused by chemical foods and artificial sweeteners:
- An “empty” feeling, ongoing sadness and anxiety;
- Tiredness and a lack of energy;
- Loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary activities, including play;
- Sleep problems, including very early morning waking;
- Problems with eating;
- Crying a lot;
- Aches and pains that won’t go away;
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering;
- Feeling guilty, helpless or worthless;
- Irritability;
- Thoughts of death or suicide;
- A suicide attempt.
Reactions to nasty chemicals vary among people, especially children. Depression can hide behind a smiling face, a temper tantrum or hyperactivity, but don’t ignore the warning signs!
Types Of Depression
There is no single cause of depression, but one way scientists classify depression is to divide it into two types:
- Primary
- Secondary
This helps identify the causes of depression, specifically when messing with your brain chemicals, such as aspartame.
Primary Depression
Primary depression affects people who are generally healthy, but show sudden signs of depression as a reaction to something out of the ordinary, like a new medication or a trigger, such as the Coronavirus/COVID 19 lockdown.
Primary depression can cause a change in normal brain chemistry that, in turn, affects your mood and creates temporary depression or a blue-funk.
Secondary Depression
Secondary depression is linked to a reaction to toxins over a longer time period. Don’t forget that many food chemicals and most all medications penetrate your brain, which over-stimulates the neurons to the point of mental imbalances.
The effects may not always be immediately apparent.
They sneak up on you over time; accumulating toxicity with continued use. This type of depression is a silent danger, and many children have trouble communicating when they are experiencing their harmful effects.
The Depression Gene
Genetics can play a role in depression. Studies show that some forms of depression run in families.
Children of depressed parents may be at a higher risk of becoming depressed themselves, so it is very important to prevent a high-risk child from being exposed to artificial sweeteners and all food chemicals, drugs or alcohol.
At the first sign of behavioral changes and depression, especially for a child, remove all artificial sweeteners and food chemicals from their diet. Even if your primary doctor doesn’t recognize the influences of diet sweeteners on depression or aggression, it does no harm to remove toxic food chemicals and return to a natural, whole foods diet.
Make sure you and your children spend some joyful time together, like playing board games and getting outside in the sunshine, Overall physical fitness and a balanced diet are crucial ways to avoid illnesses that can bring on depression or anxiety symptoms.
This COVID debacle is very stressful for everyone of all ages.
Avoid food chemicals, diet sweeteners, unproductive idle time, and do your best to keep your life, simple, healthy, and loving.
