Dear Dr. Hull: I’ve been chewing a single pack of Orbit gum every day for about 6 months. I tried to quit once before, and finally went cold turkey. Sounds stupid, but all the chewing was the result of just being so anxious at work.
The gum chewing was soothing for some reason. It seems so dumb to be that anxious, but I knew the gum wasn’t good for me, and needed to find an alternative solution.
I’ve since switched to peppermint tea, and now drink tons of it. I guess you can say that it’s working!
Thanks for putting out the info on the dangers of diet sweeteners in sugarless gum. I would have never known it was slowly poisoning me. I’m still anxious at work, but at least I feel better!
From Dr. Hull
Thank you for your great observations. What you’ve experienced is not uncommon at all; hence, it’s one of their marketing successes.
This is why sugarless gum is so popular. You were very wise to switch to the peppermint tea, and it’s really sad that there are little to no alternative gum choices anymore – like pure peppermint gum sweetened with stevia, let’s say. Makes you wonder.
Also try Chaga or green tea – they’re healthy, too.
Chewing sugarless gum can definitely affect your health because you release the toxic ingredients in your saliva, then you slowly swallow the sweet poisons, and over time, you are drip-by-drip swallowing harmful chemicals over hours at a time.
Keep up the good work following your instincts – you are on the right track!
