One of the most confusing parts of my detox program is the niacin flush. Some people have actually gone to the ER concerned about a strong flush. It is common to think that a flush means that something is wrong, but a good flush is signaling that something is right!
Q:
This is the 2nd day of taking 5-50 mg niacin.
I got a red rash on my forearms and on my neck, and it was itchy. Now that’s a reaction.
A:
I welcome your questions about the flush, and let me tell you that many people have questions about their first flush. It is common to think that a flush means that something is wrong, but a good flush is signaling that something is right!
You had a good reaction to the niacin because the flush means that it is cleaning your blood of toxins and replacing these spaces with oxygen in your blood.
Q:
Can I take a flush-free form of the niacin so I don’t have to experience the flush?
A:
No. You want to experience the flush to know how much niacin you need to break up and remove the toxins that have deposited within your blood, your tissues and organs.
Plus, the flush-free forms of B3 niacin have been altered in the lab to stay in your liver as it slow releases, and this is toxic to your liver. Any slow-release and buffered products are toxic to your liver because they are unnaturally forced to remain in the liver as opposed to immediately releasing into the blood stream, which is natural and healthy.
All digestion of any natural food is supposed to complete within 45 minutes – slow release is unnatural and turns toxic. Have you ever gotten warm and tingly after drinking a good red wine? This is the niacin in the wine – it naturally detoxes you.
Q:
Had you not told me what kind of reaction to expect, I would think I had an allergic reaction to something. Seems like I’m allergic to everything these days.
A:
There are more pollutants in our environments these days, our GMO foods and seeds are taking over the food supply, and people’s immune systems are more stressed today than ever before. Once you detox and improve your digestion of nutrients, your allergic reactions should lessen and hopefully go away.
I know I am repeating myself, but it is very common to think that the flush is signaling something is wrong, but now you know that it is signaling that something is right!
Q:
How long do I continue to take 5-50 mg of niacin a day?
A:
Continue to take this dose of niacin as long as a mild flush continues.
As the flushes increase and get stronger, then you can back down by 1-50 mg for 3 days or so (which means that you are now taking 150 mg a day instead of 200 mg) and gauge the strength of the flushes as you decrease the dose.
Remain on a low dose that gives you a very mild flush for as long as you choose at this point.
Q:
My anxiety and insomnia are coming back some, but I’m praying it is just a sign of toxins leaving my body.
A:
That is correct – as you remove what is CAUSING the insomnia and anxiety, it stirs that cause up and many times your symptoms will appear to worsen.
In reality, the toxins are just reacting to the root causes being removed – you see them, smell them, and feel them. But, this is why they were making you feel ill in the first place – they were stirring things up inside of you, but now the toxins are excreting.
Celebrate getting them out of your body. Detoxing can be awesome when you hang in there and let it complete its mission!
I hope this helps, and I wish you the best in health,
