Do you get sleepy after a big meal?
Eating the right kind of meal can result in more energy, an improved mental capacity, and positive emotional well-being. Eating the wrong kind of foods can knock you out after your meal.
Eating the right kinds of foods leaves you feeling satisfied for hours. Or it should anyway …
If you feel tired and sleepy after you eat, you may not be eating the right types of foods for what you body needs.
Asleep At The Wheel
Ask yourself:
- Are you still hungry after you eat a filling meal?
- Do you develop a sweet craving after you eat?
- Does your energy level drop when you finish a meal?
- Do you get sleepy after eating?
- Do you get depressed after you eat?
If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, then you probably overate an improper combination of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.
You might think your diet is pretty good, but having too much of one type of food might not be satisfying your body’s needs.
What do I mean by this?
Make sure you are balancing your protein, carbohydrates, and fats. If you are avoiding carbs, your body might be telling you that it still needs them. If you are avoiding eating meat, your body is telling you that you need more protein. And if you are eating too many saturated fats … well, your body will definitely shut down and go to sleep after you eat.
How Do You Know What You Need To Eat?
It is important to identify your individual nutritional needs, and learn what YOUR body requires for YOU, individually.
Some people need more protein than carbs, and some people need more carbs than protein. You need to determine what body type you are so you can accurately identify which foods you need to avoid.
Typically, if you’re not overeating, you should avoid the foods that make you sleepy after you eat.
You will be one of these three body types:
- protein user
- carb burner
- mixed carb and protein
Eat Right 4 Your Type
I highly recommend the book, Eat Right 4 Your Type. This book was published decades ago, and has continued to offer one of the best ways to determine which foods are the best for your body type by using your blood type.
It always good to consult with a nutritionist who specializes in individualized eating programs, and it’s always good to eat smaller portions at each meal, and never forget that cooking at home is healthier than eating fast foods.
And remember to avoid the diet sweeteners.
I hope my article gets you started on ways to enjoy your meals without falling asleep before the dishes are done.
