There will always be reports questioning the safety of aspartame because it has been proven many times to cause cancer, birth defects, and numerous degenerative diseases.
A 2002 review, nonetheless, carried out on more than 500 scientific papers published between 1988 and 2001 on the safety of aspartame, concluded that the sweetener was safe at the intake levels recommended.
Then in 2005, a damming study published in the European Journal of Clinical Oncology linking the sweetener to the incidence of leukemia in rats, prompted the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) to order an urgent review of the additive by one of its subcommittees.
This recent “review” did not consider the original aspartame research beginning in the 1960s, it did not investigate the history of aspartame approval, and it did not include the FDA’s original 1970s denial of approval based on the findings of brain tumors.
Bad Karma
The sub-group of EFSA, the Scientific Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Materials in Contact with Food (AFC), disagreed with some of the conclusions in the oncological papers submitted for review, and concluded that aspartame was not linked to cancer and that the current intake levels did not need to be revised.
Wow. I am speechless at the corruption that still supports aspartame safety. I guess the tricky play on words here is that they state “aspartame does not cause cancer.” They are not saying that aspartame is safe to consume, or denying that aspartame causes brain lesions and fetal deformities.
There is no doubt that the research beginning in the 1960s showing that aspartame caused lesions in the brains of the lab mice was the beginning of a chain of scientific studies confirming aspartame’s carcinogenic properties. I am stunned at the corruption that still remains in this sweetener war, and I hope that the people responsible for this paid-off safety statement get a good dose of karma … this profit over health game has gone on far too long, but obviously, it’s now too big to stop.
All you can do is believe what you know to be right, and don’t be a Sheeple to organizations like this. I have reposted the links at the end of this article to the scientific studies that have proven aspartame causes cancer and is a danger to human health, especially to a fetus, a baby, and a child.
How Much Is Safe?
No amount of aspartame is safe in my personal and professional opinion, but the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) set the Acceptable Daily Intake or ADI (the amount of an additive that can be consumed every day over a lifetime with no appreciable health risk) at 40 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. This is equivalent to 2,800 milligrams for an average adult. For an average three-year-old child, it is about 600 milligrams.
An adult would have to drink around 14 cans of a sugar-free drink every day before reaching the ADI, but there are numerous people who easily drink a 12-pack a day, chew diet gum, and eat pre-packaged diet foods. No one can know for sure how a child’s body will react to diet sweetener chemicals, especially before puberty – if they try to convince you that a baby or a child is at NO risk, then they are hoodwinking you, and themselves!
It’s time to hold these people and organizations liable if your child gets sick from aspartame; then see what they say.
The Studies
The following studies are well-respected research studies that were performed properly.
As I wrote in my book Sweet Poison, the corporate studies were the ones that were actually questioned. The Bressler Report specifically states that the corporate studies were flawed.
A five member FDA Task Force headed by FDA Inspector Jerome Bressler received 15 Searle aspartame studies to examine. Bressler discovered that some of the test animals had developed uterine tumors during the research studies, and determined that some of the blood tests had been tampered with.
According to Bressler’s report, Searle claimed they experienced problems with their instruments, and, therefore, substituted the results of some studies with other test results.
The EFSA did not consider this information in their review.
Dr. John Olney, Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Richard Wurtman, MIT, Dr. Diana Dow-Edwards, SUNY New York, and Dr. Woodrow Monte, Arizona State University are but a few of these renown aspartame researchers who have performed studies on aspartame with negative research results
Their laboratory studies resulted in findings of holes (lesions) in the brains of lab rats fed aspartame in the early 1970s, deformed fetuses and lab pups born with lower IQs from aspartame consumed in utero, nerve damage, seizures, and death as a result of aspartame administered during research studies performed in the United States.
According to the EFSA, all these studies were flawed?
Aspartame Causes Leukemia and Lymphoma
The Soffritti Study is the most recent experimental demonstration of the multipotential carcinogenic effects of aspartame administered in feed to Sprague-Dawley rats. The primary scientists performing this study are Drs. Morando Soffritti, Fiorella Belpoggi, Davide Degli Esposti, Luca Lambertini, Eva Tibaldi, and Anna Rigano.
Believe me, these scientists know what they were doing in the lab, and the world should be grateful for their honest research results. The test results came under so much scrutiny from Big Pharma, the soft drink industry, and from the politicians, the researchers agreed to repeat their research.
The second set of test results were more damming than the first test results.
According to the EFSA, both of these studies were flawed?
Aspartame Causes Malignant Tumors
The purpose of the short-term The Pecs, Hungary Study was to investigate the biological effects of aspartame consumption on key oncogenes and on the tumor suppressor gene. After one week of aspartame administered at various doses to CBA/CA female mice, the results showed that among the rats receiving aspartame, a significant increase of lymphoreticular neoplasms, brain tumors and transitional cell tumors occurred. The research team concluded that aspartame has a biological effect in the body, even at the recommended daily maximum dose.
According to the EFSA, these studies were flawed?
Aspartame Impairs Memory
The Tsakiris Aspartame Study in Greece showed in 2005 that over-use of aspartame, as well as the long-term effects of aspartame, impair memory. Aspartame ingestion (according to the study) will eventually lead to down-regulation of post synaptic ACH receptors, and ultimately disrupt memory and learning.
According to the EFSA, these studies were flawed?
Aspartame Alters Human Genes
The Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Public Health University of Pecs, Pecs, Hungary, published a new aspartame study January, 2007 showing that aspartame ingested, even at maximum daily dose, changes the genes in various organs in animals. So, EFSA and the Scientific Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Materials in Contact with Food (AFC), you are confirming that ALL of these studies are flawed? ALL of these studies were not performed properly? NONE of these studies show that aspartame causes cancer?
How do we let these politicos and big corps know that we know that they are corrupt?
DON’T BUY THEIR PRODUCTS WITH ASPARTAME ….
That’s the only way to remind them that we are still intelligent humans beings …. sorry, EFSA and AFC, but I don’t buy into your conclusions of aspartame safety and that all these studies were flawed.
