What would you do if the electricity went out for a week or so?
One of the caveats of my work is blending my experience as an environmental engineer with holistic nutrition. The two disciplines mix perfectly.
Unforeseen events or natural disasters are not the product of tin-foil hatters. Preparing for the future is the product of very wise thinkers.
Last week, the office adjacent to mine caught on fire. Apparently, the electrical box was over-loaded, and the electric panel went up in flames. Luckily, my office escaped damage – thank goodness, but the electricity in the entire office complex is shut off, and no one knows how long we will be without electric and phone service.
Hence, Plan B.
How To Prepare
We are all hooked to the global grid these days, but when the grid goes down, are you prepared to weather the storm?
If the electricity goes out, gas pumps don’t work, ATMs don’t work, pharmacies will likely be closed, food can’t be delivered to the grocery stores, fresh water may run out, and your sewer system may back up.
There are some healthy preparations you can make for impending unknowns, and these are prudent steps to keep you and your family safe and healthy until things return to normal:
- Have 20 to 30 gallons of bottled water stored in a dark, cool place, even if you are on a water well, which runs on an electric pump;
- Keep 60 days of extra medicines in a cool and dark place, especially insulin;
- Stuff 30 to 60 days of extra cash aside to use for whatever goods are available – remember that the ATMs will not be working, if you can even get to one;
- Have 5 to 15 bottles of bleach on hand for sanitation and sterilization;
- Keep extra pet food in storage;
- Buy solar lighting, especially flashlights, but keep extra batteries around, too;
- Have some dried food to last everyone in the family for 2 weeks;
- Keep extra protein powder for a food source; this helps with hungry kiddos;
- Have defense weapons at arms reach to protect from both 2-legged and 4-legged predators looking for food and shelter;
- Know your neighbors so that everyone can group and work together;
- Don’t be dependent on “the system”; the system will be busy controlling those dependent on the system;
- Learn about natural medicine so you can default to basic health skills;
- Grow some food at your home – in a small garden or a vertical garden if you live in the city;
- Don’t panic or fall into fear; Nature is a living and breathing thing, and human beings are merely one piece of a very large puzzle. Educate yourself about natural Earth events, the current political status, and the global financial problems today, and simply be aware and prepared.
No one expects a fire in their office building ….
No one wants to be in the path of a tornado or hurricane ….
No one expects a solar flare to fry the electric grid….
We all hope that the banking system resolves its insolvency in healthy ways …
If any unforeseen event takes you off the grid for a week or so, learn what you can do to keep you and your family healthy.
